A Whirlwind Adventure in Cong - Where History Meets Hollywood!

Cong

Hello there!

I hope this finds you in good spirits, because today I’m taking you to one of the most charming villages in the west of Ireland: Cong, County Mayo. Tucked among green fields, old stone walls, and winding village streets, Cong feels like the kind of place where history, scenery, and storytelling all meet.

I recently visited this lovely corner of Mayo, and as I walked through the village, it was impossible not to feel the spirit of The Quiet Man. Cong is famous as one of the filming locations for the much-loved movie starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, and the connection is still very much alive today. Strolling past the familiar spots, I could almost imagine Sean Thornton and Mary Kate Danaher stepping out from the screen and into the village around me.

But Cong is far more than a famous film location. This beautiful village is steeped in Irish history and legend, with stories reaching back to the earliest days of myth. One old tale links the area with the Fir Bolg and the Tuatha Dé Danann, two legendary peoples said to have battled for control of Ireland.

As I wandered further through the village, the ruins of Cong Abbey came into view. Its old stone walls still carry a quiet sense of mystery, as if they are holding on to the stories of monks, miracles, and centuries gone by. There is something special about standing in a place like that, where every archway and weathered stone seems to have a memory of its own.

And then there is the scenery. With Lough Corrib nearby and the magnificent Ashford Castle adding to the landscape, Cong feels like a place made for slow walks, photographs, and a bit of daydreaming. It is peaceful, beautiful, and full of character.

So, if you ever find yourself in the west of Ireland, make time for Cong. Come for The Quiet Man, stay for the history, the scenery, and the feeling that you have stepped into one of Ireland’s great old stories.

If you are ever in Dublin, pop in to see us on O’Connell Street for more Irish travel inspiration, and let me know in the comments if you have visited Cong yourself!
