The Riordon Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Riordon family history parchment:
Despite their origin in Co.Tipperary the clan O’Riordan have been so long associated with Co.Cork that they are considered to belong there. Their descendants are still more numerous in this area than any other, spilling over slightly from Cork into counties Limerick & Kerry. The original inhabitants of the northwest corner of Cork were known as followers of the Lords of Muskerry, but the place name Ballyreardon in East Cork indicates that their influence extended at least as far as there. In the 17th century several Co.Cork O’Riordans are recorded a soldiers. The 18th century saw the long established Riordans from Derryroe embracing to the Irish community of Nantes in France. They later became French peers. The 19th century was a period of mass emigration to the New World. Following the Act of Union in 1800, industry in Ireland was subjected to sudden fierce competition from England and the resulting unemployment and poverty left the thousands with little choice but to look hopefully to a new life elsewhere. For a family of eight to travel steerage in 1855 the fare was £24. For this they were given food and water during the passage which might take between fifty and eighty days. Any other comforts such as eating utensils and bedding, they had to provide themselves. One of the travellers was Eliza Reardon- alternative form of Riordan- who sailed from Liverpool to New York in the ‘Isaac Wright’ on the 1st of November,1850. In the 20th century Professor Sean O’Riordan (1905-1957) from Cork was an archaeologist of international repute,he was responsible for the excavation at Tara, the ancient royal site in Meath, which had both religious and political significance in Irish history for two thousand years. During the passing of time the name has changed; the many variations include Riordan, Reardon and Riordon.
