The O'Toole Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O'Toole family history parchment:
Throughout their history, the O’Tooles- O Tuathall in Irish- are noted for their involvement in military struggles of one kind or another. From the Anglo-Norman invasion at the end of the 12th century until the end of the 17th century they never ceased to resist conquest. They were assisted in this by the nature of their territory which, although not far from Dublin, was situated in the wooded and mountainous Co. Wicklow. It was to Felim O’Toole at Glendalough that Hugh O’Neill, the great opponent of the Tudor conquest, came for shelter following his escape from Dublin Castle in 1590. O’Toole lands covered the same area as the diocese of Glendalough and their influence was such that, until the 13th century when it was united with Dublin, their chiefs wielded the power to nominate the Abbots and Bishops of Glendalough. One Abbot was Laurence O’Toole who, in 1171, despite being archbishop of Dublin took up arms to fight the invaders. He is believed to have founded St. Saviour’s monastery near Derrybawn in 1162. He was later canonized; the remains of the monastery can still be seen. A great many other O’Tooles followed his pattern and in the 18th century took up military service abroad in France and other European countries. Captian Luke O’Toole was personally decorated by Pope Clement III for his part in the dairing exploit to rescue Maria Clementina Sodleski of Poland, subsequently wife of James III- the ‘old pretender.’ Another Laurence O’Toole (b. 1722) of Fairfield, Co. Wexford, was an officer in the Irish brigade in France and had eight sons. All of whom served in the French army, the eldest Colonel John O’Toole was made a count, the ancestor of the present Count O’Toole of Limoges.
