The O'Meara Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O'Meara family history parchment:
O’Malley Although not very numerous, O’Malley is one of the most well-known Irish names, one of those with a particularly ‘Irish’ quality about it. Even during the period when it was fashionable for the 'O' prefix to be dropped from Gaelic names this rarely occurred in the case of O’Malley. In Irish it is O’Maille, although in County Mayo it is sometimes O’Maele, which results to the Anglicised form of Melia. This may explain why claims have been made for it to be pronounced O’Mailey. County Mayo has always been the area most closely associated with the name, and the great majority of O'Malleys are still concentrated in Connaught and particularly in Mayo itself. Their territory consisted of the baronies of Burrishoole and Murrisk. They were particularly famous as a seafaring sept as their motto proudly proclaims: ‘Terra Marique Potens’ -powerful by land and sea. This reputation lends credibility to the many romantic tales of Grace O'Malley (1530-1600) described by writers of the times as a ‘most famous sea captain' and 'nurse of all the rebellions in the province for forty years.’ Another famous leader was Austin O'Malley (1760-1854) who fought with Humbert at Castlebar in 1798. George O'Malley distinguished himself at the Battle of Waterloo, and Patrick O'Malley, son of Austin, was a general in the French army. The Reverend Thaddeus O'Malley (1796-1877) was a priest whose unorthodox views both on ecclesiastical and political matters frequently led him into conflict. Of those who left Ireland and rose to fame in the U.S.A., Frank Ward O’Malley (1875 -1932) was a noted author and wit.
