O'Donnell Family Crest

Created by Edmond McGrath (RIP) in the 1970s, these Irish prints were rediscovered in 2020 after 40 years in safe storage. Beautifully arranged in this Irish coat of arms parchment is an artistic celebration of the O'Donnell Irish surname. The O'Donnell family crest is illustrated at the center and surrounded by famous Celtic symbols of Ireland. These illustrations are a wonderful dedication to Irish last names.

There is so much to take in. This parchment is an heirloom for many generations yet to come. It's a wonderful reminder of your Irish heritage.

On your living room wall, you will always be reminded of your Irish origins and it will be a show stopper for visiting friends and family. Presenting a family coat of arms gift is a truly special gift for the home for someone special who has that unique Irish connection.

The O'Donnell Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O'Donnell family history parchment:

This is one of the most famous names in Ireland. There were two small O’Donnell septs- one in Corcabaskin in West Clare, and one in County Galway, but it is the mighty O’Donnell sept of Tyrconnell in county Donegal which has produced the many eminent, sometimes romantic figures of Irish history. They take their name from Domnhall, a descendant of Niall of the Nine hostages, a powerful fourth-century high king of Ireland, and thus are called O’Domnhall in Gaelic. They rose to prominence in the thirteenth century and are best remembered for their youthful, vigorous, and enterprising leaders of the Elizabethan and Stuart eras. Not least of these was Hugh Roe O’Donnell, the last of the true Gaelic kings. Nicknamed ‘Red Hugh,’ he was incarcerated, at the age of sixteen, in Dublin Castle from where he escaped five years later to lead the tribes of north in battle against Elizabeth’s forces. After brilliant victories, he was defeated at Kinsale, and fled to Spain where he met an untimely death by poisoning in 1602, aged only 31. A close relative, Rory O’Donnell, first Earl of Tyrconnell, of the legendary ‘Flight of the Earls,’ also died in exile six years later and Sir Niall Garv O’Donnell spent twenty seven years in the tower of London as a result of his exploits in Ireland. Irish O’Donnells are still found in the ancient mountainous homeland, but many exiles have achieved fame. The Spanish dukes of Tetuan are O’Donnells descended from Leopold O’Donnell, an emigrant who rose to be Spanish Prime Minister in 1858. In ecclesiastical circles, Dr. James Louis O’Donnell was the ‘Apostle of Newfoundland,’ and in the later half of the last century Cardinal Patrick O’Donnell was the youngest bishop in the world.
