The Nugent Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Nugent family history parchment:

The original form of de Nogent can be traced to Nogent in France as far back as 930 A.D. It was brought to Ireland during the Anglo-Norman invasion in the twelfth century when this Norman family was granted large tracts of land in Meath and Westmeath. The title of baron Delvin was created for them in 1486 and later in 1621, the head of the family became Earl of Westmeath. As a result of this long association, the family completely integrated into the Irish scene and one branch established itself in County Cork as a characteristic Irish sept or clan. Their chief was based at Aghavarten Castle near Carrigaline. There is a great deal of evidence of the Norman occupation of this area, and the name of Nugent is still found very frequently there. It is well distributed throughout Ireland now, although rather rarer in Connaught.  History records a great many Nugents who distinguished themselves as soldiers on both sides in Ireland’s early struggles. One of the best known was Christopher Nugent (d. 1731). Following the siege of Limerick in 1691 when Irish forces finally surrendered to William III, he transferred his service to France as old many of his contemporaries. The regiment he commanded came to be known as Nugent's Regiment, he was wounded at least twelve times in the course of his career which took him to Scotland with James III . In 1715, John Nugent (1672-1754), fifth Earl of Westmeath also served James II and France.
