The Nolan Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Nolan family history parchment:
The Irish form is O’Nuallain meaning a descendant of Nuallan. The derivation of this is uncertain and may be and connected with ‘Nuallan’ in modern Irish meaning- a shout. The area in which the name is most frequently found now and where the historical associations are strongest is the barony of Forth in county Carlow. The original Nolans held hereditary high positions in the service of the kings of Lienster. They were known as the princes of the Foharta (now Forth). Following the invasion from the twelth century onwards their power declined though their status remained. In the sixteenth century one branch migrated to Connaught were they eventually owned a great deal of land. In 1878 Connaught landowners named Nolan processed between them over 12,000 acres. Another small independent sept or clan of O’Nullain existed who may possibly have been the ancestors of the present Nolans in West Munster. Among those who have achieved distinction in some way are the most Rev. Edward Nolan, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin and the notorious Philip Nolan (1771-1801). As one of the early emigrants to America he became infamous as a wild frontiersman and contraband trader. A great many others carried the name to the New World as they left Ireland in their thousands in an attempt to get away from the poverty and unemployment of Ireland in the nineteent century. One such traveller was a James Nolan aged 22 who saled from Galway to New York on 4th May, 1849 as a passenger on the boat “Bark Capactacus.”
