The Monaghan Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Monaghan family history parchment:
The Monahans, or Managhans as they are often known, are found in considerable numbers around the area originally occupied by them. This was that part of County Roscommon between E'Ipnin, where St. Patrick founded the first Bishopric, to Jamestown. Although widely dispersed, the name is still found more frequently in Galway, Mayo and Fermanagh than elsewhere. In Irish the name is O'Manacháin; the Manachán referred to was a ninth century warrior of great renown. Manachán signifies a monk, and this has sometimes been used as an anglicised form of the name. A Dick Monk, who fought at the Battle of Arklow in 1795, was known as Richard Monaghan. In 1287 the Four Masters record of O'Managhan as Lord of the Three Tuathas of Roscommon. It was about this time that they were overthrown by the O'Hanlys, another important Connaught group. Shortly before this the Dominican Friary at Athenry, county Galway, was founded, the church is theory part which has survived the centuries and it was destroyed by fire and war, and rebuilt at least twice. Here, in 1686, following its tradition as a burial place for prominent people a remarkable Monaghan tomb was established. One of the more famous bearers of the name was James Monaghan, the Irish-American poet, born in County Westmeath in 1862. He was only one of the any Monaghan who went to the New World to escape the poverty and unemployment of Ireland in the nineteenth century. Another hopeful traveller was John Monaghan who sailed from Liverpool to New York on the 'Isaac Wright' in November 1850.
