The McNamara Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the McNamara family history parchment:

The name in Irish is McConmara, derived from 'cu' meaning hound, and 'na mara' of the sea. The old forename, Cumara, was the name of the ancestor who gave his name to the clan of McNamara. He was reputed to be twenty third in descent from Cormac Cas. The McNamaras have a distinguished history. They were second only to the O'Briens in their homeland of Co. Clare where they are still well represented. They held the hereditary office of Marshalls and the particular honour of inaugurating the Chief of the O'Briens. Their particular area was smal initially but by the end of the 11th century they were Lods of Clancullen. A large area of East Clare, and remained so until the 17th century. At some point the clan split into two branches. The chief of West Clancullen was known as McNamara Fyre (from 'fionn' fair) and the Chief of East Clancullen, McNamara reach (Riagach: swarthy or grizzled). There are many reference to them in the history of Clare. In 1402 they founded the Franciscan Abbey of Quin. From the 17th century onwards much of their land was lost in the struggle against Cromwell. One family, however, remained substantial landowners at Ennistymon until this century. In the 18th century a number of McNamara attracted lively reputations. Donough McNamara, otherwise known as Donnchadha Rua Mac Conmara, was educated as a priest but having been expelled, led a wild life as Gaelic poet. Another Clare man, Admiral James McNamara was tried for murder following a duel over a dog. Thomas 'Fireball' McNamara led a swashbuckling existence in France and eventually became a highwayman. Another famous representative of the name was Brinley McNamara, the playwright.

I bought the Donnelly family print as a birthday gift for my father in law and to say he was delighted is an understatement- he has a great love of history and to have an art piece of his own family history made him very proud. The delivery was so fast and the quality of the print and paper is top notch-If I could give 10 stars I would- Thank you!
