The McManus Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the McManus family history parchment:
In Irish this time is Mac Maghnuis, son of Magnus, and this has sometimes led to speculation that its origins are Norse. In fact, although the Latin name Magnus meaning Great, came originally from Northern Europe. Its use in combination with the Gaelic 'Mac' is thoroughly Irish. It is one of the names from which the 'Mac' prefix has not been dropped to any extent although sometimes in Ulster it has been anglicised as Mayne. One Maghnus who gave his name to a particular group was the son of Turlough O'Connor, King of Ireland, he died in 1181, and his descendants were associated with the Parish of Kilronan in County Roscommon. In moderns times the name continues to be found in Connaught but it is more numerous in County Mayo. Another indentifiable group were an influential Fermanagh family who lived on the shores of the beautiful Lough Erne with its many Islands, ancient church sites and weathered crosses. A branch of the Maguires, they were formerly commemorated in the name of the Island of Ballymacmanus, now Bell Isle, and connected to the Lake Shore by a bridge the famous Annals of Ulster were compiled here McManus is now the second most numerous name in the County Fermanagh lists, far more frequently found here than anywhere else. The most famous representative of the name was Terence Bellew McManus (1823-1860) who fought beside William Smith O'Brien at Ballingarry. He was sentenced to death out escaped after being later transported to America.
