The McDonogh Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the McDonogh family history parchment:
This surname is MacDonnchadain in Gaelic, and means ‘son of Donchadda’, the latter being a well known personal name of ancient origin. It arose in two different parts of Ireland. In county Cork, the most prominent McDonogh family held the strong castle of Ranturk in the Allow valley, and were known as Lords of Duhallow. They were a branch of the powerful McCarthys, and it is believed that many among them asumed this name. The other McDonogh sept was in Connaught, where its chiefs were lords of Tireril in county Sligo; they were descended from the same stock as the McDermots of Roscommon. Several McDonogh have achieved fame, many overseas, no less than forty members of one McDonogh family in Sligo served in the Irish brigade in France. John McDonogh, born in Ireland in 1779. Is remembered for his philantropic work on behalf of slaves in America. In 1814, at the battle of Piattsburg, another McDonogh, Thomas, made his mark as an officer in the American navy when he played a significant part in the colony's victory. He was eventually given command of the American forces in the Mediterranean. In Ireland, Thomas McDonagh, who was executed in 1916, was a poet of some note, and in the following generation Donagh McDonagh was also a writer and dramatist.
