The McDermott Coat Of Arms Story

This sept, named Mac Diarmada in Gaelic, had three main branches which were all descended from Tadhg O’ Connor, a King of Connaught before the twelfth century. The most important branch held much of County Roscommon and were based at Moylurg. The second group, called McDermot Roe, or ‘red’, owned the desolate land of Kilronan in County Galway. Madam McDermot, wife of the chief of this family, was known for her patronage of the Harper O’ Carolan in the eighteenth century-at a time when this ancient Gaelic custom of Aristocratic patronage had long since died out. The third branch of the sept was also in Connaught, but was anglicised, and fell into obscurity at an early date. The McDermots are one of the few septs to have an authentic chieftain surviving to this day: his title is the McDermot, Prince of Coolavin; other McDermots are now mostly found in Connaught, and also in Donegal and Tyrone. There were several outstanding members of this sept, the earliest being Brian McDermot, the sixteenth century owner of the celebrated manuscript ‘the Annals of Loch CE’. Hugh McDermot, born in 1834, and chieftain of the sept, was a prominent politician and barrister. Malcolro McDermot, an architect, was contracted by the Egyptian government to rebuild Alexandria after the bombardment of 1882. Peter Rowe McDermot was a poet who fought and described the American civil war. Today the name is often spelt as McDermott.
