Madden Family Crest

Beautifully arranged in this parchment and created by Edmond McGrath (RIP) in the 1970s and only rediscovered after 40 years in safe storage, we bring you a very special illustration that encompasses symbols of your Irish tribal heritage. The owner of this name is by definition a child of Ireland in culture and in blood!

On this A1 (23.4 x 33.1 inch) sized parchment, your special Irish Coat of Arms is deservedly embellished by all the many ancient Celtic inspirations of Irish artists, scholars and architects. At the centre you see the backdrop of the Kerry landscape with her scenic Killarney lakes, whilst other bordering elements are the craftsmanship of sculptors and builders who managed to create works of art with the most basic of tools. With this parchment you will see your family name as an integral part of the Irish story which will forever remain an integral part of Irish heritage.

This parchment can be an heirloom for many generations yet to come as your family thrive into the future making their own mark on history as your ancestors did. Your unique Irish family Coat of Arms is a wonderful creative reminder that your name has an Irish tribal identity with its origin, derivatives and impact on the culture of Ireland and worldwide. All of this written in Celtic calligraphy. The design inspiration is about Ireland’s story and how your family have made a mark on Ireland history.

The Madden Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Madden family history parchment:

In Irish the name is O’Madain although there was an earlier form of O’ Madadhain, the ‘O’ prefix disappeared in the period of Gaelic suppression and, unlike many other names, it has been revived. This sept or clan was a branch of the famous Ul Maine which occupied lands in County Galway beside the Shannon and over into County Offaly. In early times their chief was acknowledged lord of that area until the coming of the Norman forces in the twelfth century. Even then it took the Anglo-Norman occupation some considerable time to reach the Shannon, and longer to subdue Connaught and add it to their conquests. This part of Ireland was never as completely influenced by the Normans as some counties further east, and the O’ Madadhains as some counties further east, and the O’ Madadhains retained their lordship under the De Burgos. The name Madden is still frequently found in this area. In County Mayo, the name Mas A’ Mhadaidh is sometimes anglicised as Madden as well as McAvaddy. Some of the Madigans of County Antrim and Berry have also been known to shorten their name to Madden. The Clare-Limerick Madigan's are, in fact, a branch of the Galway Maddens. There is also a family whose origins are English and it is this group commemorated in the place name of Maddenton in County Kildare, still, more Maddens of Athgarret in the same county, are really O’Maddens of Galway, at their peak, Madden estates, especially in Mayo, Leitrim and Fermanagh, occupied some 25,000 acres. Among those who have distinguished themselves is the Rev. Samuel Madden. (1686-1765) the philanthropist of the Maddenton family, and Richard Robert Madden (1798-1886) the author.
