The Kavanagh Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Kavanagh family history parchment:
Kavagnah is an unusual name in that it is one of the very few old Gaelic surnames which has neither a Mc or O’ prefix. It has also many interesting associations. The Irish Caomhánach is an adjective indicating an association with St. Caomhan, the relationship in fact stemmed from the first Kavanagh being fostered by a successor of the saint. The continued use of such an adjective is in itself unusual. The first Kavagnah was Donal, son of Dermot McMurrough, King of Leinster. It was through the latter's appeal for assistance in his struggle with the King of Connaught that the Anglo-Norman invasion was initiated. The Normans who came to his aid stayed on after his death and ultimately extended their power over much of Ireland. Kavagnah territory laid in counties Carlow and Wexford where the greatest concentration of them remains today. They were associated with the McMurroughs for a very long time and the name was often carried in addition to McMurrough. Art McMurrough Kavanagh was one of the famous holders of the name, having been knighted by Richard II in 1394 he proceeded to steadily enlarge his territories and establish a strong Gaelic state within striking distance of Dublin from which to resist that same king. Cahir Mac Art Kavagnah(1500-1554) was involved in the Geraldine rebellion and in 1590 Art Kavagnah accompanied Hugh O'Neill in his escape from Dublin Castle. Many Kavagnahs served European powers and had, it seems, a reputation for being unusually well built. In the seventeenth century Brian Kavagnah described as the tallest man in King James’s army, and Morgan Kavagnah, Governor of Prague ins 1766 as the biggest man in Europe.
