The Hogan Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Hogan family history parchment:
The Gaelic form of this name is O’Hogain, derived from 'Og’ MEANING 'young.’ The ancestor from whom all Hogans stem is Bgan, a descendant of an uncle of Brian Boru, undoubtedly the greatest Irish king of all time, who lived in the eleventh century. This sept's homeland was the ancient land of Thomond, their chief resided at Ardcrony, a small settlement on the fertile lowlands to the east of Lough Derg, in what is now county Tipperary. There is also a place called Ballyhogan, which means 'homestead of the Hogans,’ near Dysart in county Clare. A quite distinct sept of Hogans was also established at an early date in Cork, but by far the greatest majority of present-day Hogans are still found in their ancient domains in Tipperary, Clare, and Limerick. Throughout the centuries Hogans have distinguished themselves in various spheres. Maurice Hogan was a Bishop of Kildare in the thirteenth century. Reverend Edmund Hogan, who died in 1917, did much valuable editing of manuscripts. He wrote his most famous book, 'Onomasticon Gaedelicum' at the age of seventy-two. The most celebrated Hogan, however, was John Hogan, who was born in 1800, and who became an internationally recognised sculptor.
