The Higgins Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Higgins family history parchment:
O'Reilly is one of the most frequently found names in Ireland although the greatest concentration of them remains in the area which they have historically been associated. In counties Cavan and adjoining Longford it is now the most numerous name in the county lists. For many centuries the O’Reillys- in Irish O’Raghailligh- descendant of Raghaillach - were the most powerful sept or clan in east Breffni. Their head was chief of Breffni - O’Reilly and their principal residence lay at Tullymongan hill on the outskirts of Cavan nearby Shantemon hill was their ancient inauguration place. The town of Cavan itself grew up around a Franciscan friary founded by Giolla Iosa Rua O’Reilly. All that remains of it today is the belfry tower. During the middle ages their influence extended as far as Meath and Westmeath. By 1878 O'Reilly landlords controlled over 30,000 ACRES. Many O'Reillys have distinguished themselves in the church. Five, including Edmund (1606-1669) and Hugh (1580-1653), were Archbishops of Armagh. Five more became Bishops of Kilmore, two of Clogher and one of Derry. Many more have become soldiers fighting in Ireland's own troubles or in the service of the European powers. In James II's Irish army, for instance, in two regiments there were forty nine officers called Reilly or O'Reilly and of these many eventually went to Europe. Count Don Alexander O’Reily (d. 1797) Had a distinguished military career in France, Austria and Spain and finally became governor of Louisiana in the United States of America. Philip McHugh O'Reilly (d. 1657) played a large part in organising the 1641 uprising. On a quieter front Edward O’Reilly was responsible for compiling an Irish-English dictionary in 1817.
