The Hennessy Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Hennessy family history parchment:
The Gaelic form of this name is O’Haonghasa, which means ‘descendant of Aonghus' or Angus. It belonged to several distinct septs located in the southern half of Ireland. the most important of these dwelt near Kilbeggan in northern Offaly where they were Lords of Clan Cholgain. A branch of this family settled on the northern side of the Liffey where the counties of Meath and Dublin meet, and became chiefs of Gailenga Beg, Other branches moved to Tipperary and Clare where they were called Henchy. Another group was established in southwest Cork near Ross Bay. Indeed, the place name, Ballyhennessy, which means ‘homestead of the Hennessys' is found in Clare, Cork, and Kerry. The most famous Hennessys have been connected with France. The family famed for its cognac is descended from Richard Hennessy, born in county Cork in 1720, who, like many Irish gentlemen, fled to the continent to become an officer in the Irish Brigade of the French army. He later settled in Cognac. His son became a French peer and married into another family famed for brandy, the Martells. Dr. Florence Henchy, from Clare, was tried in 1758 as a French secret agent, and the modern Jean Hennessy, born in 1874, was a prominent journalist and director of the newspaper, 'Le Quotidien! Nineteenth-century Hennessys achieved fame closer to home. Henry Hennessy was a professor of engineering at Newman's University, Dublin; Sir John Pope Hennessy was an Irish M.P. at Westminster. William Hennessy was a Gaelic scholar, and his namesake, born in 1839, became a popular landscape painter in America.
