The Hegarty Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Hegarty family history parchment:
This is the Anglicised form of the Gaelic surname O'Heighceartaigh, which is derived from 'Eigceartach' meaning ‘unjust.’ The sept flourished until the fourteenth century around Loughinsholm in county Derry, but branches subsequently broke away; one settled in the rugged Inishowen peninsula in the north, another chose the gentler pastureland of county Cork. The most important group settled around Tirkeeran in county Derry, and served the powerful O'Neill princes of Tyrone in their unrelenting fight against invaders. Malmuire O’Hegarty was one of the loyal and dedicated fighting men who fell in Hugh O'Neill's army at the disastrous battle of Kinsale in 1603. References to O'Hegartys are found among lists of those forfeiting land in 1691, and the appearance of several of them in the registers of persecuted priest testifies to the stout, unyielding character of this line. Hegarty's rock, at Killygarvan, is named after father James Hegarty, who was brutally murdered there in 1715. Like many great Gaelic families the O'Hegartys often took service with continental armies. In the eighteenth century, Lieutenant-ColoneI Hegarty was rewarded by Louis XV of France for his distinguished service in Lally's regiment, and Peter O'Hegarty was made governor of the Isle of Bourdon. It was an Irish shipbuilder, Daniel O’Hegarty, who founded the first freemason lodge in France in 1721, The most famous Hegarty of modern times, and the author P.S. O'Hegarty who died in 1955 after a lifetime's support for the Irish cause. In America this name has often become Haggerty.
