Flynn Name Meaning
Read the Flynn name meaning which appears on the Flynn parchment:
This is a surname belonging to several distinct septs which sprang up all over Ireland. It is derived from the Gaelic personal name 'Flann' meaning 'ruddy', the Irish form of the name being O’Floinn. It is found particularly in two main areas, in Cork and Waterford in the south, and in the land which joins Roscommon, Leitrim and Cavan. One family of these Connaught O’Flynns held office with the O'Connor Kings, and others owned land at Boyle and on the shores of Lough Conn. A famous Ulster group, which occupied the land between Lough Neagh and the coast, stemmed from a fourth-century king, Colla Uais. Most eminent O’Flynns have made their name abroad; though an early Archbishop of Tuam, Fiachra O’Flynn, represented the Irish church in England in 1255. Another ecclesiastic, Reverend Jeremiah O'Flynn, born in 1789, was a Franciscan friar who lived out much of his tempestuous and fascinating life in Australia and America. Edmund James Flynn was a late nineteenth-century premier of Quebec, and, in America, William James Flynn was a famous detective who headed the United States Secret Service during the years 1912-1917, and then rose to be chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is the actor Errol Flynn, however, who has stamped this surname indelibly on Hollywood and the world. From an Irish-American family, his scurrilous adventures both on and off the screen, and his subsequent destruction by drink, would fill volumes. The prefix 'O' disappeared in the period of Gaelic suppression and, unlike other names, has not been revived.
