The Fleming Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Fleming family history parchment:
In Irish the surname is written Pléamonn, though it is not of true Gaelic origin, the word Fleming denotes an inhabitant of Flanders, many of whom emigrated to Britain at the beginning of the 13th century. They settled chiefly in Scotland and Wales, and it was from the latter that they set out to cross to Ireland in the aftermath of the Anglo-Norman invasion of that country in the 1170’s. At this time the most prominent Fleming family obtained large areas of land, particularly in County Meath, and also in other parts of Ireland. Their seat was the Castle of Slane which they held as Lord’s Slane until the 17th century when they were forfeited after their ill-timed support of James II. Flemings are now dispersed to all corners of Ireland. The name, from early times predominantly found distinction in the church. The compiler of the priceless 15th century document ‘Fleming’s register’ was the Archbishop of Armagh, Nicholas Fleming. The Reverend Richard Fleming has been called the most prominent. 16th century Irish theologian in Europe, spending much of his life as Professor of Philosophy in Paris. He died in 1590, and just nine years later the Reverend Patrick Fleming was born: he was a Franciscan Friar, noted for his work ‘the life of St. Columban'. More recently the Reverend James Fleming, who died in 1903, achieved considerable popularity as a preacher. Two eminent 19th century Fleimgs distinguished themselves in other spheres. Christopher Fleming was an outstanding surgeon, and John Fleming became one of the leading scholars in the Gaelic revival.
