The Farrell Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Farrell family history parchment:
This is the English form of the name O’ Fearghaill which belonged to an ancient and mighty sept of Leinster. Their chiefs were Lords of Annaly, and their stronghold was Longphuirt Ul Fhearghaill or O’ Farrell’s fortress; from these words derive the town and county name of Longford. There were two branches of this important sept- one group, led by O’ Farrellboy, and the other whose chief was O’ Farrell Dane. During the sixteenth centuries their power, like that of all great Gaelic families, diminished but was not entirely eradicated. Although Ceadagh O’ Farrell was killed at the battle of the Boyne in 1690, his three sons had outstanding careers as officers in the Irish brigades in France, eventually settling in Picardy. A more recent O’ Farrell of note was sir Thomas Farrell, a well-known sculptor who died in 1900. Many of his statues adorn Dublin. A descendant of an emigrant family who made good was undoubtedly James A. Farrell; born in 1863, he rose to be head of the Farrell Steamship Line, and the United States steel company, after designing his career as a mechanic in Pennsylvania. One of the most celebrated genealogical manuscripts in Ireland, ‘Linea Antiqua’ was compiled in 1709 by Roger O’ Farrell.
