The Dunn Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Dunn family history parchment:
The Gaelic form of this surname, O'Duinn, comes from the Irish word 'Donn' meaning brown. The prefix 'O' means 'descendants of', but it has been discarded in modern times. This ancient and important sept originated in County Leix, and was one of the most prominent families of Leinster. Their chiefs, Lords of Iregan, in the bare lonely strengths of Peat Moors, were recognised as extremely hostile and dangerous to outsiders; and although the name has spread throughout Ireland. It is still mainly found in this area. The earliest member of the sept to achieve fame was Gillananaomh O'Duinn, a twelfth century historian and poet, five centuries later, James O'Duinne, Bishop of Ossery spent much of his life in France, and established there a line which was to produce several eminent diplomats and soldiers. Other Dunn emigrants sought their fortunes in America. Charles Dunn, who died in 1872, was a United States Judge of some importance, and Colonel Humphrey O'Dunne was famed for his valour in the attact on Savannah in 1774, Finlay Peter Duno, the most well-known emigrant of the name was the writer who immortalised the Irish-American type, in his numorous character, Mr. Dooley, a saloon keeper in Chicago, who appeared in a series of books written between the years 1898 and 1919.
