The Dugan Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Dugan family history parchment:
The original Gaelic form of this name is O’Dubhagain, which means ‘descendant of Dubhagan,’ and there were two main septs bearing this name in ancient times. The most prominent of these held sway in the Kilworth mountains, north of the pretty town of Fermoy, and its chief was the lord of the land which is now known as Roche’s country. The other was located in Connaught, and was part of the larger population group, the Ui Maine. The town Ballyduggan, which means ‘homestead of the Duggans,’near Loughrea, situates at least one group exactly. It was the early, Connaught O’Dugans who played a unique role in Gaelic Ireland as hereditary ‘ollamhs’ or learned poets and historians. These usually served powerful families and often travelled extensively. The O’Dugans patrons were the O’Kellys, the mighty war like tribe of the west. John O’Dugan who died in 1372 was the co-author of the celebrated the ‘Topographical Poem’ and another Gaelic poet, Maurice O’Dugan put lyrics to the tune ‘Anchuil Fhionn.’ In later times, the tradition persisted even among emigrants to America. Peter Paul Dugan, who died in 1861 was a historian, and the American poet, Augustine Joseph Hickey Duganne, who died in 1884, was, in all likelihood, a member of the sept. In ecclessiastical spheres the most Reverend Patrick Duggan was a prominent bishop of Clonfert in the 1870’s. Today most Duggans in Ireland are found in Munster. The name is seenin various forms today: the most numerous being Duggan and Dugan.
