The Duffy Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Duffy family history parchment:
This surname, O’Dubhthaigh in Gaelic, belonged to several distinct septs scattered throughout Ireland. Coincidentally, most of these have been remarkable for their connections with the church. The O’Duffy’s of Donegal traced their descent from the seventh-century saint Dubhthach, and were hereditary lay holders of extensive church property near Raphoe for eight hundred years. Another group located at Lissonuffy or Lissyduffy near Strokestowndown in Rosscommon, produced a line of outstanding twelfth and thirteenth-century ecclesiastics, associated with Cong Abbey and the Archbishop Ric of Tuam. Not least of these was Cele O’Duffy, Archbishop of Tuam, King Roderick O’Connor’s ambassador to the invading forces of Henry II IN 1175. It was the artistic qualities of this family which was responsible for the beautiful example of Irish craftsmanship - the Cross of Cong. There were also O’Duffy’s in Monaghan, and it is extraordinary that in this county’s lists of parish priests compiled in the eighteenth century, by far the most prevalent name is O’Duffy. In more recent times, they have distinguished themselves in other spheres. The long and active public life of Sir Charles Gavan Duffy began in 1842 when he helped to found the Anglo-Irish newspaper ‘The Nation.’ In 1848 he was transported to Tasmania, and on his release from prison in 1855, emigrated to Australia, where he eventually became Prime Minister of Victoria. James O’Duffy founded a famous Dublin publishing firm which was a vehicle for the nineteenth century revival of Gaelic Literature.
