The Doyle Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Doyle family history parchment:
The Gaelic form of this name is O’Dubhghaill, which comes from ‘dub ghall’ or ‘dark foreigner,’ words often used in ancient times to the denote a horsemen or Scandinavian, its origins, therefore, lay among the early Nordic invaders, particularly as the name has always been more usually found in south eastern coastal areas, where Norse settlements sprang up. Some Doyles, however, may be descended from Dudghilla, son of Bruadar, king of Idrone or county Carlow, in 851. Though it was a Doyle who built the first bridge over the Liffey in Dublin, most outstanding men of this name have been writers. The most famous of these is undoubtedly Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, born in 1859 in Edinburgh, but descended from a Dublin family; the world renowned detective Sherlock Holmes is his creation. He also wrote plays and lectured on spiritualism. His grandfather John Doyle was born in Dublin in 1797, and became a celebrated caricaturist. His contributions to ‘Punch’ between 1829 and 1851, under the initials ‘H.B.’ demonstrated his restrained satire and gentle but piquant criticism, making him a popular model for subsequent political cartoonists. His contemporary, James Warren Doyle, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin was a polemical writer who gained enormous influence in the 1820’s. Today, the name is widespread in Ireland but still chiefly associated with the counties of Wicklow, Wexford and Carlow.
