The Downey Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Downey family history parchment:

This surname is an anglicised form of the ancient gaelic name O’Dunadhaigh. The prefix ‘O’ meant ‘descendant of’ and it’s mainly from the eleventh century when permanent surnames began to be adopted by the principal sept of Ireland. At this time the O’Downeys were of some importance.  One group was known as Lords of Sil Anmchadha and held  sway over a district which lay on the fertile banks of the Shannon in county Galway. Their exploits are recorded in both the annals of ‘Innisfallen’ and the ‘Annals of the Four Masters.’ Another equally important group of O’Downeys established themselves as chiefs of Luachair, an ancient territory which lay across the boundaries of what are now the counties of Limerick, Cork and Kerry. In modern times, this surname is still found in those areas which the sept inhabited centuries ago. In Kerry, however, it has been slightly altered to Downing.  The most well-known Downey of contemporary times was undoubtedly the Most Reverend Richard Downey, born in Kilkenny in 1881 he became Examiner in Philosophy to the National University of Ireland. After preaching and lecturing in America he returned to Britain to be ordained Archbishop of Liverpool. He died in 1953.

Family Crest Parchment

Had ordered this for an 80th birthday. There was a problem getting the size frame I ordered. Aidan offered me the next size up at the same price and made sure it was hand delivered on time for the party. Great service and would definitely recommend them.
