The Dowling Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Dowling family history parchment:
The Gaelic form of this surname is O’Dunlaing- an ancient sept which originated in the territory lying along the western banks of the river Barron. This area was known as ‘Fearann ua n-Dunlaing’ or O’Dowling’s country. One of the ‘Seven septs of Leix.’ Its leading families were transplanted to Tarbert on the sandy Shannon estuary in North Kerry in 1609. Nevertheless, the humbler members of the sept continued to multiply in their original homeland, and spread as far afield as Carlow and Kilkenny. They even became established in county Wicklow, where four townlands near Rathdrum are called Dally-Dowling- ‘Dally’ meaning homestead or settlement. Most of the eminent men of this name are connected with literary activities of some form. Thady Dowling, an annalist and grammarian, born in 1544, began the tradition; almost three centuries later Vincent George Dowling founded and edited ‘Dells life’ and ’Fistiana’, which his son, Frank Lewis, continued to run until his death in 1867. Another nineteenth century editor was Richard Dowling who was connected with the Dublin Humorous Journals ‘Zozimus’ and ‘Ireland’s eye.’ Bartholomew and Willian Dowling, nineteenth century brothers, were both writers, the latter identifying strongly with America. The most famous emigrant of the name was the most Reverend Dustin Dowling whose family left Ireland for America in the mid-nineteenth century. He became archbishop of St. Paul’s, U.S.A. and died in 1930.
