The Doran Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Doran family history parchment:
This name is an anglicised form of the Gaelic O’ Deordhain which is possibly derived from ‘Deoradh’ meaning an exile. In ancient times the O’ Dorans held the distinguished position of hereditary Brenons. These were men of great learning and were the judiciary of the Gaelic system. Though the Dorans have been rightly described as ‘the great Brenon family of Leinster’. It is antiquarians that they are remembered for having preserved in their family one of three manuscript copies of the 'Tripartite Life of Saint Patrick'. In 1540, the family resided at chappell in County Wexford, a bleak wilderness in those times, with the blackstairs mountain looming in the distance. In this century they were accused of aiding rebels, yet only a generation later they were consulted by the Lord Deputy of Ireland on a matter of Government Administration. Listed among the principal gentlemen of County Wexford in 1608, certain Doran families were transported to Kerry in the following years. Their association with their home county continued, and the place name, Doransland emphasizes this. As might be expected, the most eminent Dorans have been scholars. In recent times Charles Gullfoyle Doran, born in 1835, was a book collector and writer, and Dr. John Doran, also of the nineteenth century, was a poet and historian. The history of the Dorans is not without its more violent incidents. Maurice Doran, Bishop of Leighlin, was murdered in 1523 by his Archdeacon, one of the Kavanaghs. The name is still found in Leinster, mainly in county Wexford, and also in Armagh and down, where a variant surname- Dorria- is often used.
