The Donovan Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Donovan family history parchment:
The Gaelic form of this surname is O’ Donnabhain which comes from two words- ‘Donn’ meaning brown and ‘dubhan’ meaning balck. The eldest branch of the family has one of the best documented pedigrees in Ireland, extending back unbroken to Gaelic times, when the sept was among the most distinguished of Semi-Royal blood. Originally from County Limerick, the Donovans were forced south west into Cork by the Anglo-Norman invasion in 1179, and it is here that the vast majority are found to this day, although a smaller group settled around Kilkenny, the descendants of whom still live in this area. After the Jacobite defeat in the seventeenth century, the leading Donovan families who, until then had extensive territories in County Cork, lost all their wealth and influence and fled to the continent, where they took military service in the Irish brigades. This role salted them well, as many were distinguished soldiers, and O’ Donovan’s Infantry had been one of the most prominent regiments in King James II’s Army. Not all were men of the sword, however; several donovans were eminent scholars. Not least was Dr. John O’ Donovan, a distinguished antiquarian and grammarian born in 1809, his son, Edmund, was both soldier and journalist. Jeremiah O’ Donovan achieved posthumous fame his funeral at Glasnevin cemetery in Dublin in 1915, was the largest ever witnessed there.
