The Donnelly Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Donnelly family history parchment:
The ancestor from whom this sept takes its name was Donnghalle O’ Heill who was seventeenth in descent from the fourth century high ring or Ireland, Niall of the nine hostages. Their surname was thus O’ Donnghalle in Gaelic and they were a branch of the powerful Ulster O’ Neills. The Donnellys’ original territory was in County Galway, but later they moved further east into County Tyrone, to the Western Edges of the fertile plain which borders Lough Neagh, settling around Ballydonnelly, which is named after them. It is in this part of Ireland that the name is still most usually found. The chiefs of the sept were hereditary Marshalls of the O’ Neill forces, famed for their daring leadership and bravery, Donnell O'Donnelly, the most outstanding of these died fighting in the battle of Kinsale in 1603, Patrick Modardha O’ Donnelly captured the septs ancient seat, Ballydonnelly castle, from Lord Caulfield in 1641, out the castle is still known as castle Caulfield. Modern Donnellys have made their name in America, more than at home. Ignatius Donnelly became Lieutenant governor of the state of Minnesota in 1858 at the age of twenty eight, and subsequently became a prolific writer, popular politician and ardent reformer. His sister, Eleanor Cecelia, seven years his junior, was noted for her devotional writings.
