The Connell Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Connell family history parchment:

This ancient sept dominated the brooding and mysterious loughs and mountains of Kerry, claiming descent from Eremonian Aengus Turmeach, who is thought to have been High King of Ireland in 280 B.C. The early form of the name was O’ Conghail, and the sept was originally in East Kerry, their chieftain being Lord of Magimihy in the beautiful Killarney region. In the 11th century the O’ Donoghues drove them Westwards to the Atlantic Coast where, by the 15th century, they had become hereditary governors of Ballycarbery Castle. During the upheavals of the 17th century, the most prominent family of the sept was moved to County Clare, where its descendants still remain. Today the leading O’ Connell family are once again located in the Barony of Magimihy. This sept has produced truly outstanding Irishmen. An exile, Daniel count O’ Connell who died in 1833, was the last colonel of the Irish Brigade in France at a time when his kinsman, Baron Moritz O’ Connell, also serving on the continent was chamberlain to three different emperors. Friar John O’ Connell composed the historical poem ‘Tuireadh na Heireann’ in 1700, and Peter, another academic of the family, born seventy-five years later, was described as ‘The Best Irish Scholar in the Ireland of a century ago’.
Maurice O’ Connell was a celebrated square, smuggler and autocrat known as ‘hunting cad’ but it was his nephew who was to give the name world-wide fame. This impressive barrister, Daniel O’ Connell, early in the 18th century, earned the title ‘the Liberator by his representation of the Irish people in the house of commons, he was a sincere and gifted statesman whose magnificent oratory made nimao eminent leader. The prefix ‘O’ disappeared in the period of Gaelic suppression and, unlike other names, it has not been revived.

The team at Gifts of Ireland did an outstanding job creating my husband's family crest shield based upon the original design. It's exactly what I was hoping for.
