Irish Monks believed that union with God could best be attained by withdrawal from civilization into harsh and isolated regions. Skellig Michael, off the Irish Kerry coast, was one of these isolated hazardous monastic island retreats founded about the 6th century by St. Fionan. To reach the most secure and remote areas on the island, the monks carved natural steps from the rock.
Skellig Michael has recently gained new global fame due to its appearance in the recent Star Wars films as the secluded home of Jedi Luke Skywalker.
