The Byrne Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Byrne family history parchment:

The Gaelic form of this surname is O'Broin or 'descendant of Broen' an 11th century King of Leinster. His tribe, originally from County Kildare, went to ground in the wild mountains and wooded ravines of South Wicklow in the wake of the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1179. It was here that they settled, with their chiefs residing at Ballinacor. They were a proud, fearless clan who were among the few ancient Irish tribes to successfully resist invaders of the territory. It was only in the closing years of the 16th century when the most formidable of their cheiftains - Fiacha McHugh O'Byrne was caught and killed, and his son Phelim was wrongly accused of crimes by the English, that their estates and power began to disintegrate. The O'Brynes heroic explores in the 16th century have been immortalised in the famous 'Neabhar Branach' or Book of the O'Brynes'. In the 18th century they were still active in the 1798 Irish Rebellion. They were also prominent in France. where they owned extensive vineyards near Bordeaux, and entered the French Nobility in 1770. More recently, in America, the Most Reverend Doctor Andrew Bryne became a missionary to the Indians in the first half of the nineteenth century. John Byne, who emigrated to New York at the time of the Great Irish famine, became a brilliant surgeon and pioneered the successful cauterisation of malignant tumours. Thomas F. Byrne, of the New York Police Department, made his reputation in an entirely different field: he developed the 'third-degree' method of interrogation.
