The Browne Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Browne family history parchment:
This family was one of the fourteen 'tribes of Galway'. It was descended from a certain Le Brun, who came to Ireland with the Anglo-Norman invasion in 1179. The Brunachs, as they became known in Gaelc, took over the territory of tirawley and established themselves in Galway by intermarriage with the powerful Lynches, and the other tribes of the West- the O'Flahertys and the O'Malleys. It is interesting that two of Galway's more important contemporary residents share this surname. They are Monsignor Patrick Browne, a Gaelic Poet and President of University College, Galway, and the Most Reverend Michael Browne, Bishop of Galway. These are other Brownes in Ireland, however who have different ancestors. Those around the beautiful district of Killarney are more likely to be descended from an English landowner who migrated to this area in Elizabethan Times. This branch were peers of the realm until the Kenmare line recently became extinct. The Brownes of Camus in County Limerick were another illustrious, branch of the name of whom General Ulysses Browne, born in 1705 is perphaps the best remembered. There are further families bearing this surname in Connaught. The Admiral William Browne, who won renown as the creator of the Argentine Navy in the early years of the nineteenth century, may have belonged to one of these.
