The Boyle Family Crest

Created by Edmond McGrath (RIP) in the 1970s, these Irish prints were rediscovered in 2020 after 40 years in safe storage. The Boyle Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Boyle family history parchment:

This is the Anglicised form of the Irish surname, O’Baoighill, which derived from the word 'Baigell' meaning ‘having profitable pledges.’ This sept held sway, together with the O’Donnells and O'Dohertys, in the strange and ruggedly beautiful mountains of Donegal. Ballywed is a version of 'Baile ui Bhaoighill' or 'Home of the Boyles.’ The most famous of this sept’s descendants was William Boyle who died in 1922-a a poet who described Irish rural life, but whose fame rests on the successful plays he wrote for the Abbey Theatre. His contemporary, engineer Richard Boyle, was famed for his heroic exploits during the Indian Mutiny.  The most prominent Boyles in Ireland were English in origin. Richard Boyle, who went to Ireland in 1588, acquired the property of the executed Sir Walter Raleigh and bet about dramatically extending his territories in Waterford, Cork, and Tipperary, to become what has been called 'the first colonial millionaire.’ His family, which numerically was also on a grand scale, inherited his huge estates when, as Earl of Cork, he died in 1645.  His fourteenth child, Robert, born in 1627, at the majestic Lismore Castle, which overlooks the loveliest part of the Blackwater river, became an experimental physicist of real importance. It was he who left us Boyle's Law, which states that the volume of a gas varies inversely with pressure. He also wrote on religious subjects and funded the publication of the Old Testament in Irish.  His brother, Roger, Earl of Orrery, was a well-known soldier and statesman.
