The Barrett Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Barrett family history parchment:

It is generally considered that this surname was brought to Ireland In 1171 with the Anglo-Norman invasion. The Norman branch of family chose to settle around Mayo and Galway, while the Anglo-Saxon element penetrated the deep wooded gorges and glens of County Cork. Both branches were completely assimilated into the native population of the Middle Ages, when they had considerably increased their wealth and influence by becoming lords of Tirawley. The family's extensive holdings in County Cork grew. They were judiciously guarded through the turbulent rebellions of the early seventeeth century, only to be fragmented in 1691 when Colonel John Barrett, who had raised an infantry regiment for King James, forfeited a large part of the estates. He died at the Battle of Landen, two years later, fighting for the French. Subsequent generations of the Barrett name found success in more creative spheres. George Barrett rose to prominence as a landscape painter in the second half of the eighteenth century, while the verses of his younger contemporary Richard were earning him the title of "Poet of Ennis.” The Reverend John Barrett, who died in 1821, and was associated with Dublin University, proved to be notable Hebrew scholar. During the nineteenth century the name spread to America, where Laurence Barrett (1838-1891) became one of the leading actors of the day. Fenian Michael Barrett found fame of a different kind when, in 1868, he was condemned for attempting to blow up Clerkenwell Prison, and became the last man to be publicly executed in England.
