Studio Donegal Knitwear
Studio Donegal is based in Kilcar, County Donegal, along the Wild Atlantic Way where a tradition of handweaving and wool textiles dates back to the late 1700s. Textiles provided an important income for rural dwellers in the cottage industry, while local farmers supplemented their income by hand weaving tweed from the rough homespun yarn.
In the late 1980s Kevin Donaghty and his wife Wendy were determined to preserve the tradition of hand woven traditional Irish clothing in Kilcar, so they took the brave step of taking over Studio Donegal. Each year thousands of visitors tour the Studio Donegal workshop, where they can witness some of the finest weavers of Ireland creating unique pieces to wear. They continue to create beautiful Irish capes and shirts for men and women from the finest Irish tweed. Donegal is famous for having so many beautiful beaches nestled along the Wild Atlantic Way, but it has only one Studio Donegal. Enjoy shopping at Gifts of Ireland for your favorite Irish wool capes, wool throws tweed waistcoats and tweed jackets!
