The origin of birthstones
According to the International Gem Society, the tradition of birthstones has been linked to biblical times. In the Book of Exodus the breastplate worn by Aaron, the first high priest of the Israelites, was described as being adorned with twelve different stones, each representing one of the twelve tribes of Israel. These stones were said to have great powers and could predict people's fates.
