The Tobin Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Tobin family history parchment:

Tobin is not a Gaelic Irish name but developed from the form de St. Aubyn which was how they were originally known. They came from France following the Norman invasion, and in the course of time completely adapted Irish nationality and character. By 1200 they were to be found in countiess Tipperary and Kilkenny and, in the manner of the Norman advancement later spread to Waterford and Cork. There is still a significant number of them in the areas but rather if you were elsewhere. Ballytobin near Callan in in Co. Kilkenny where a well preserved Norman motte and traces of the Bailey can still be seen, was named after them. They became so powerful that the head of the family was known unofficially as Baron of Coursey. They must have been a turbulent group as recorded in the 14th century that they were more feared than the native Irish by the English settlers. Many years after their establishment in Ireland one branch of the family returned to France and settled at Nantes along with many Irish emigrant families. Edmund Marques de Tobin (1692-1747) belong to this branch and was killed fighting for Spain in the war of Austrian succession. Yet another branch emigrated to Newfoundland. A James Tobin was a member of the 1689 parliament as a member for Fethard. In the 19th century was a period of mass emigration as thousands of individuals and families ventured to the New World in an effort to escape poverty and unemployment of Ireland. Among them are certainly a number of Tobins. Robert Tobin set sail from Belfast to New York on 8th May 1848 on board the ‘Constitution.’ On 6th November in the same year John Tobin left Liverpool for the same destination on the ‘Intrinsic.’
