The Roche Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Roche family history parchment:

Roche is not a Gaelic name, but in common with a number of others it is now considered exclusively Irish- emigration has distributed it widely. Like Dower and Nugent it first came to Ireland in the 12th century when Strongbow and his mixture of Norman, Welsh & Flemish knights came to Ireland in support of Dermot McMurrough, King of Leinster. With their help he regained the kingdom from Rory O’Connor of Connaught, but, after his death in 1171, Strongbow seized power and the Norman invasion began. The name is derived from the French ‘de la Roche’- of the rock. In Medieval times it was often rendered: de Rupe- from the Latin ‘Rupes’- a rock. In Irish it is de Roiste.  Most of the original Roches settled in Wexford & Munster. They have particular associations with Co. Cork. An influential family of Roches held extensive territories around Fermoy, for a long time it was known as Roche's country. The head of this family Baron Fermoy. One of the most important citizens of Co. Wexford in the 16th century was Reene de Rochesland. Father Philip Roche - a Wexford man and an Edward Roche were prominent in the 1798 rebellion, and Sir Boyle Roche (1743-1807), a famous ‘wit.’ The 19th century was a period of mass emigration and many Irish men and women left the poverty and unemployment of Ireland for the New World.  Among them was Michael Roche, who left Cork for New York as a passenger on the ‘Free Trader’ on the 25th June, 1847. James Jeffry Roche, born that same year also went eventually to America where, as well as being a poet, he became the American minister to Switzerland. Another James Roche (1770-1853), an author, had a varied and interesting life, interesting himself in the business and politics of Paris, Bordeaux and Cork.
