The O'Rourke Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O'Rourke family history parchment:
As Lords of Breffny, The O'Rourkes were one of the great ruling families in mediaeval times. Their territory varied in area from time to time but at its greatest their authority extended from Kells to Co. Meath to Sligo in the west. Before the Norman invasion several kings of Connaught emerged from their ranks. One of the most renowned princes of Breffny was Tiernan O’Rourke who was killed in battle in 1172 after being involved in many stirring adventures following the abduction of his wife Dervorgilla by Dermont McMorrogh . From the 17th century onwards many of the most enterprising and talented members like Colonel Count John O'Rourke emigrated to Europe and became valued military leaders or distinguished themselves in the service of influential families. In 1700 Joseph John O'Rourke, a prince in the Russian aristocracy, was Genral-in-Chief of the Russian empire and two count Owen O'Rourkes served the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria from 1750 to 1780. In the world of letters, Father Manus O'Rourke (1660-1741) spent his life in France, writing prodigiously in the Irish language. Edmund O'Rourke (1814-1879), under the pseudonym of Falconer, was a famous dramatist and actor-manager of his day. Despite the decline in numbers caused by emigration, the name remains one of the hundred most numerous in Ireland. Even now, the greatest concentration of O’Rourkes is to be found in the counties of Cavan and Leitrim and surrounding areas which originally formed the ancient kingdom of Breffny.
