The Neill Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Neill family history parchment:
The O'Neill clan has a very distinguished history and its representatives figure lately in Irish affairs over a long period. It was Niall, King of Ireland, killed in battle with the Norsemen in A.D. 919, who gave his name to the powerful Ulster group. The famous Niall of the Nine Hostages was another ancestor. The Ulster clan, from whose arms the red hand of Ulster was taken, has been the most influential. The first to bear the surname was Donell O’Neill. They were the chief family of the Cinel Eoghan and their territory comprised what is now Tyrone, most of Derry and part of Donegal. The Ui Neill were high kings of Ireland down to the reign of Brian Boru which ended in 1014. There were two main branches, the northern Ui Neill, and the southern, who both established themselves in southern Ulster and Neath. In the 14th century one branch migrated to Antrim and were later known as Clann Aodha Buidhe from Hugh Boy O’Neill, slain in 1283. O’Neills are still well represented in this area as they are in West Ulster. Several independent clans existed in other parts of Ireland including the O’Neills of Thomond in Co. Clare, those of Co. Carlow in the barony of Rathvilly, and yet another who descendants are found in Co. Waterford and South Tipperary. There have been many famous representatives of the name, particularly the Earls of Tyrone in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Others of note include Arthur O’Neill, the blind harpist (1737-1816). Among those who emigrated to the United States of America was the actor James O’Neill, whose son Eugene (1888-1953) became the famous dramatist. The rpefix 'O' disappeared in the period of Gaelic suppresion and, unlike other names, it has not be revived.
