The McMahon Coat Of Arms Story

Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the McMahon family history parchment:

McMahon is one of Ireland's best known names and like many of the ancient Gaelic names it is still most frequently found in the area where the original sept or clan settled and established themselves. In Irish, it is MacMathghamha or the more modern MacMahuna, said to be derived from the Irish word for dear. Two areas are particularly associated with the name and the two distinct septs who founded it. In county Clare it is the most numerous name in the county lists. This group traces its descent from Mahon, son of Murtagh Mor O’Brien, King of Ireland, who died in 1119. The last inaugurated chief of the name was killed at the battle of Kinsale in 1602. Their territory was Corcabashin in West Clare.   The other sept was associated chiefly with County Monaghan in Ulster. Following the decline of the O'Carrolls they became Lords of Orel in the 13th century and today the name is still the most numerous in the county. The family has had a particular relationship with the church in Ulster. An early bishop of Clogher, Heber McMahon (1600-1650) was also a notable commander of the Ulster army.  In the 18th century three McMahons of the same family were all first bishops of Clogher and subsequently archbishops of Armagh. These were Bernard McMahon (1680-1747), his uncle Hugh, who died in 1737, and his brother, Ross Roe McMahon (1698-1748). Many other McMahons represented the name in various causes, like Colonel Brian McMahon who fought at Denburg in 1646; Colonel Art McMahon infantry regiment was notable in King James Irish army. Many McMahons served in the Irish brigades.
