The Kennedy Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Kennedy family history parchment:
The ancestry of the Kennedys Stretches right back in time to the days of the legendary Brian Boru, his nephew. It is said, was called Cinneide and so this man’s family was known as O’ Cinneide which has changed, over the centuries, to the now rare O’Kennedy and the more popular Kennedy. These people came originally from that beautiful and historic part of the Shannon Valley overlooked by the Slieve Bernagh Mountains near Killaloe on the borders of Clare and Tipperary. They left their mark in this area in the name of the Parish of Killokennedy, but pressure from other warlike clans caused them to cross their beloved Shannon and settle more securely in the Lands of Ormond. Here the sept or clan was divided into three branches under the leadership of three different chieftains who were distinguished by the colour of their hair-bon (brown), Fionn (fair), and rua (red). Many old tales record the adventures of these and other brave and warlike leaders protected. It is said, by St. Ruadhan of Lorrha. One branch moved to Antrim around 1660 and the name is still found there although some may be descendants of a group of Kennedys from Scotland. This clan has, of course, produced one of the most famous and distinguished families in America, rising tragically to the highest office in the land. Another member of this family has achieved political distinction in modern times and that is the brilliant lawyer, Hugh Kennedy (1879-1936) who became the first Chief Justice of the Modern Republic of Ireland when it emerged at last from many troubles to achieve its own independence.
