The Keating Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Keating family history parchment:
Although not exclusively an Irish name, Keating has a long history in Ireland. The original Keating were Normans who came to Leintster as part of the force responding to King Dermot McMurrough’s request for aid. When he died in 1171 their leader, strongbow, as Richard De Clare was known, seized power, and the Anglo-Norman invasion was underway. Along with other similar families, they established themselves initially in Co.Wexford but with the passage of time, branches arose in Leix, and other parts of Southern Leinster. In 1613 the Lord Deputy, writing of ‘Queen’s County’- as Leix was known, because of its associations with Mary Tudor- described the Keatings as ‘great sept of people’. In 1579 Sir Nicholas Maltby was less charitable in his description of the Carlow members, calling them ‘Ill disposed Rebels’. For many years the Keatings were prominent in high offices such as Sheriffs and members of parliament. John Keating was at one time Lord Chief Justice and also a member of the 1689 parliament. Their fortunes vacillated in the seventeenth century and a considerable number were dispossessed, one family so affected being from as far north as County Meath. The most famous figure among the Keating was Seathrun Ceitinn- Dr. Geoffrey Keating (1570- 1644)- priest and author of important works in the Irish language who managed to preach and publish in a patriotic vein despite being frequently hunted by English soldiers. In modern times we also have the distinguished painter, Sean Keating, well known for his portrait painting and also President of the Royal Hibernian Academy.
