History of the Celtic Cross

The Celtic Cross emerged in Ireland and Britain during the early Middle Ages as Christianity became established among Celtic communities. Its distinctive design brought Christian imagery together with elements of Celtic artistic tradition.

This combination became part of what is now known as Insular art, a distinctive artistic tradition that developed in Ireland and Britain. The word “insular” comes from the Latin insula, meaning “island.”

The precise origins and original meaning of this feature remain uncertain, although the circle also provided structural support when the design was carved on a monumental scale.
