Clay pipes are steeped in Irish heritage. Back in the day, they were known as duídíns. The tradition with the clay pipes was that they would be smoked, broken and laid on the grave of the departed.
At an Irish wake, the men left behind would celebrate their life and times whilst puffing away sweet tobacco filled clay pipe. Nostalgia fills the air with the release of a puff and heads nod with approval of the great moments gone by. Beyond the haze of smoke, the sound of a fiddle gets the dancing going.
After the funeral, at the grave, the pipe would be broken into pieces and laid onto the grave for eternity.
An Irish Blessing at a Funeral
May the roads rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rains fall soft upon fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
About the origin of the pipes
When Knockcroghery was burnt down by the Black and Tans in 1921, the small village in Westmeath lay at the centre of a thriving clay pipe industry. Ethel Kelly's studio is set where this factory once was and we are delighted that she has brought the making process back. Traditional craftsmanship renders each pipe a unique, authentic Irish craft-piece, and is an extra special gift for our parting glass collection.
