The Gallagher Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Gallagher family history parchment:
This sept may claim royal descent, as its name O’Gallchonair in Gaelic means ‘descendant of Gallchodar,’ a nobleman descended from a seventh-century High King of Ireland. Their extensive territory covered the softly undulating lowlands of East Donegal, and their chief’s strongholds were Ballybert and Ballynaglack. The latter held the important hereditary position of marshall to the military forces of the powerful O’Donnells, Kings of the North, until the sixteenth century. It was not as men of war that members of this sept earned the distinction, it was in ecclesiastical spheres. Five O’Gallaghers were bishops of Raphoe in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. A bishop of Derry, the Most Reverend Redmond O’Gallagher helped survivors of the Spanish Armada in 1588 who landed on Ireland’s coasts. He was subsequently captured and martyred, after spending several months in hiding disguised as a shepherd. A Gaelic preacher whose sermons gained immense popularity was a later bishop of Raphoe and of Ossory, the Most Reverend James O’Gallagher who died in 1751. A nineteenth-century emigrant to America Father Hugh Gallagher, was a frontier priest, while a contemporary of his, William Davis Gallagher broke with his traditional vocation to the church and became a poet of some note in America. Under a state-aided emigration scheme in the same century, a brother and sister in their twenties, Michael and Margaret Gallagher left Liverpool on the ‘Metoka’ to arrive at new York York in October 1847.
