The Fitzgerald Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Fitzgerald family history parchment:
Fitzgeralds in Ireland trace their origins to one man, Gerald, who came with his wife, Nesta, Princess of Wales, from Pembroke. In the 12th century Anglo-Norman invasion., ‘Fitz’ means ‘son of’ and so it was his son, Maurice who formed the permanent surname. This ambitious ruling family known as the Geraldines fill the pages of Irish history, and two noble branches of it still exist under the titles of Duke of Leinster and Knight of Glinand of Kerry. These represent the original two branches of the family, one of which settled in Kildare, the other in Desmond. Their power was enormous. Garret Fitzgerald, ‘The Great Earl, enjoyed a remarkable political career as Lord Deputy of Ireland in the late 15th century. His grandson, known as ‘silken Thomas’ because of the silk fridge on his soldiers’ helmets, had a spectacular, if brief, like being executed at the age of twenty-four, with five of his uncles, at Tyburn in 1537. His sister, Elizabeth, brought up with the Tudor princesses, was a celebrated beauty, known as ‘the fair Geraldine’. Her Kinswoman, ‘the old countess: wife of the twelfth Earl of Kildare, was one hundred years old when she died in 1604. All families have a black sheep, and the Geraldines were no exception. George Robert, executed for murder in 1786, was a noted Duellist whose infamous, lawless excesses terrified all who knew him. The ape in the Kildare coat-of-arms commemorates a 13th-century incident when, to the terror of the family, Thomas Maurice Fitzgerald’s baby son, was snatched from his cradle and carried to the castle bac battlements by a tame ape. He was fortunately for later generations, returned safely to his bed.
