The Doherty Coat Of Arms Story

O’ Dochartaigh, for such is the Gaelic form of this surname, is derived from the word ‘Dochartach; which meant ‘Obstructive’. This was an important and powerful sept which originated in the fertile lowlands around Raphoe in Donegal. By the fourteenth century the O’ Dohertys had grown considerably in wealth and stature to become Lords of the Rocky Innishowen Peninsula. In 1608, however, all their lands and holdings were forfeited when they were ruined by an ill-timed rebellion on the part of their leader, Sir Canir O’ Dougherty. Nevertheless, to this day, despite such upheavals, the majority of bohertys in Ireland still originate in Donegal or immediately adjacent areas. They have played prominent parts in many walks of life, over the world. John Doherty, born in 1783, became Lord chief Justice of Ireland, and Charles Joseph Doherty was a Canadian minister of Justice in the early twentieth century. In the arts, William James O’ Doherty was a nineteenth century sculptor of note, and in 1877, Paul Doherty, an American painter of seascapes, was born in Brooklyn. The most eminent Dougherty in ecclesiastical circles was Dennis Joseph Dougherty, American Archbishop and cardinal, who began his extraordinarily active mission in the Philippines, and became archbishop of Philadelphia in 1915.
